SCS supports the first Co-operative Free School

The first free school to adopt a co-operative model has been given the green light to open.

swanage school

The 420 pupil school will open in 2013 and is currently being planned by Education Swange in conjunction with the Co-operative College and the charity Human Scale. Education Swanage started as a campaigning group of parents, teachers and residents when the local authority decided to close the town's middle school. This would have left the area with no secondary school and the only town in the county without one.

SCS will support free schools where there are gaps in provision and the governance of the school fits in with the models established for Co-operative Schools.

I am delighted that Swanage will get the secondary school its community have campaigned for over such a long period of time. If that active community engagement canm be translated into ongoing supportfor the school through membership it will provide another mdoel for the fast growing Co-operative School sector..

Dave Boston, SCS Chief Executive

It is great that the Education Swanage proposal has been successful and we believe this will be the first genuine co-operative school to emergy from the free school policy.
